No. Sharm has sites for all levels. Beginners: Local shore dives (e.g., Naama Bay, Sharks Bay) and protected boat sites (e.g., Ras Um Sid) are perfect. Advanced: The Straits of Tiran and shipwrecks like the SS Thistlegorm often have strong currents and depth, suitable for Advanced Open Water (AOW) divers
Sharm operators are strict about safety standards (CDWS regulations). 6 Months Inactive: You must do a "Check Dive" (usually the first dive of your trip is done on a shallow, easy reef to demonstrate skills). 1 Year+ Inactive: You may be required to take a "Scuba Review" (a half-day refresher course). Tip: Bring your logbook! If you cannot prove your last dive date, they will make you do a check dive.
No. Most reputable centers require: Advanced Open Water certification. 20+ Logged Dives minimum. A "Local" Dive First: You must do at least one day of local diving (shore or boat) beforehand so the guides can check your buoyancy and air consumption.
Gloves: Generally prohibited to prevent divers from touching coral. Exceptions are sometimes made for medical reasons or very cold water, but expect to be told "no." Knives: Recreational divers are usually not allowed to carry knives in the National Parks. Touching: Strictly forbidden. Touching coral or feeding fish can result in fines or being banned from the boat.
Yes, but they are not guaranteed on every dive. Common: White Tip Reef Sharks, Grey Reef Sharks. Lucky: Hammerheads (Tiran/Jackson Reef), Whale Sharks (Spring), Thresher Sharks. Rare: Tiger Sharks, Oceanic White Tips (more common in Southern Egypt).
Yes. Sharm El Sheikh has one of the highest concentrations of diving infrastructure in the world, including a state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Chamber. Police checkpoints ensure security on roads to the marina. Always verify your dive center is CDWS certified (Chamber of Diving and Water Sports) – look for the ISO audit sticker on their door.
